Article Summary In the big scale simulation applications like traffic environment (in which there are a lot of dynamic objects like vehicles, pedestrians and taffic lights), the dynamic objects should have autonomy to some extent in order to present unique and realistic behaviour patterns complying with predetermined set of rules. In this paper, we present the procedure of modelling the behaviour of intelligent vehicle agents efficiently, based on a unique two layer Hierarchical Concurrent State Machines (HCSM) framework. A realistic urban traffic environment typical of real life was created in a driving simulator. Experiments and evaluations demonstrated satisfactory results in terms of validity of our model.
